Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the attack made him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in 2020.
